  • The Goal: The player’s journey from the bottom of the board to the top represented the soul’s progression through multiple lifetimes. The ultimate goal was to reach the top, symbolizing Moksha—spiritual liberation and salvation.

  • Ladders (Virtues): Ladders symbolized positive traits and righteous actions (like generosity, humility, and faith) that accelerated a soul’s spiritual growth.

  • Snakes (Vices): Snakes represented moral failings and sins (like anger, greed, and theft) that caused spiritual regression and pulled the soul back down into lower forms of existence or rebirth.

  • The Role of Destiny: Because players simply rolled dice (or cast cowrie shells) to move, the game taught that while one must strive for virtue, ultimate destiny and the circumstances of life are often governed by cosmic forces beyond direct human control.

Interesting Fact: In the original boards, there were intentionally more snakes than ladders. This theological design choice emphasized that the path to spiritual liberation is highly difficult, and falling into vice is much easier than ascending through virtue.

What is Moksha Patam?

Moksha Patam (also known as Gyan Chaupar) is an ancient Indian board game that served as the original predecessor to the modern game of Snakes and Ladders.

Rather than a simple children’s game, it was originally designed as a sophisticated spiritual teaching tool to explain the concepts of karma (cause and effect), dharma (righteous duty), and moksha (liberation from the cycle of rebirth).
